2014 Get Started Write Challenge: Day 26

For today’s task, take your book idea from yesterday and start fleshing out who your target audience is for the book. Age range? Gender? Profession? Hobbies? Etc. Try quantifying, if possible, through organization memberships, magazine circs, etc.

For my poetry title, I know that I’m targeting people who write poetry. In fact, I’m targeting people who write poetry and want to learn more about how to broaden their knowledge of the poetic craft and business.

Looking for quantifiable numbers, Poets & Writers magazine claims a readership of 100,000–many of those being poets. I can also provide numbers on AWP conference attendees, members of the National Poetry Society, and any other quantifiable source of information that helps pinpoint my target audience: practicing poets.

Start figuring out your target audience.

Land a book deal in 2014!

Learn how.
